Artist Statement
I hand build functional ceramics using primarily white earthenware clay slabs, where textured design serves as the canvas for lustrous colors. To start, I make impressions into wet clay using found objects, purchased, and custom stamps. Urdu words are sometimes hidden in the tapestry of the pattern to tell a story, while small shapes are often added to leather-hard clay to enrich the narrative. Colored glazes in a contrasting palette are used to decorate the surface. Inspired by the intricate details of miniature paintings, my process is meditative, aiming to blend these design elements seamlessly to yield a unique and attractive final product.
In my sculptural practice, I embrace a childlike curiosity for exploration of ideas and techniques. Each piece begins with a loose concept, and I delight in allowing the clay to dictate its own path. It’s as if my hands have a mind of their own, leading to outcomes that often surprise and captivate me, fueling my passion for this mode of expression. As my work evolves, I eagerly anticipate the discoveries and growth that lie ahead. Utilizing grogged clay coils and slabs for structural strength, I employ a range of firing techniques to highlight the characteristics of each piece.
